you can already check it out by creating a custom mastered dvd. The custom mastering environment does already contain the base for the 0.9.4 release including this change. The bootparameter is somehow "documented" at the isolinux bootprompt.

The final mastered livedvd 0.9.4 is going to be published at Sep. 19th in URZ Basel. It will be avaliable for download some days later.

That's great news, thanks a lot! Any idea what the kernel param will be named? Or is it documented on the disc/readme?

Happy ending -

Following up on my own post: The hour was late and I was not sharp, but after all the updates, and the invocation of the game sound script which does:

echo "${game} 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss

sound worked in q3demo. At first I didn't hear it because the volume was lower. But it all works now, and gaming in general seems snappier under suse 11.0 than it did under 10.3

I have been playing this original quake 3 arena demo from 1999 for years, on slackware, redhat, fedora, and suse. It always worked well, although I had to add a workaround with the game sound script after suse 10.0 or so I think, when the sound system changed.

Now, with pulseadudio, I just can't get the old /dev/dsp approach to work anymore, and the old gamesound scripts don't do seem to have any effect. When I start the old q3demo, this is what I get:

------- sound initialization -------
/dev/dsp: Broken pipe
Could not toggle.
------------------------------------

The newer quake 3 arena from icculus works, but it's slow and ponderous, and doesn't feel right compared to the fast, nimble 1999 demo from idsoft.

Has anybody had any luck finding out how to make these old /dev/dsp oriented games work with pulse audio?

then wait, until all the gamepackages of those games are available for custom mastering and master your own live.linux-gamers.net dvd with your favourite games. Or create the game packages on your own.

try version 0.9.3. If there the problem still occurs, try to set your resolution manually with the tool and specify your monitor's frequencies.

When I start linuX gamers 0.9.2 it shows a large screen that can fit on my monitor. When I try to change the resolution it does not. What should I do now.
