This year's Linux Tag in Berlin is now over for one week and with this article we want to summarize our activities and share our impressions from the event. For sure there was a lot of work beforehand and at this point I want to thank all people from our team and from the Linux Tag team for their einthusiasm and engagement. This year linuX-gamers.net was represented by a crew of ten people. We presented our web portal linuX-gamers.net emphasizing our new live-DVD project aswell as our young non profit organization linuX-gamers.org e.V.
On two posters, one for the project, one for the organization, we informed the visitors about our past, current and future activities and our engagement to convince people of gaming on Linux. Further we used the free spots left on the wall to advertise our fourth lan party in october. In case the booth was too crowded from time to time or visitors were in a hurry all information was available as leaflet [1] or flyer just to pick up. With a beamer presentation we gave some impression of our real life activities and showed screenshots from all types of games running on Linux. Unfortunately due to some compatibility problems with our beamer we could not project live games "on the wall". On up to eight computers we demonstrated actual game titles running on linux either natively or by using the wine wrapper. At two of our computers visitors had the chance to play and test linux games from our live DVD. We've had a busy time at our corner aswell as Flightgear, who presented their flight simulator at the other half of the booth with a spectacular setup.
There were quite some international visitors at Linux Tag and at our booth. Also press representatives payed us a visit. Kristian Kißling from LinuxNewMedia published a small article at LinuxCommunity portal and Thomas Mönkemeier did a short interview for his LinuxTag Podcast showing some scenes from World of Padman, my personal favorite on our live-DVD. Also a German TV broadcaster (3Sat) took a shoort sequence at our booth, showing some scenes from Glest, which btw, is not an MMORPG (as it was reported by 3Sat) but an open RTS game, which does not yet support online play. Besides our booth there were other interesting events like numerous talks from international speakers or booths from other free projects or Linux related enterprises.
One highlight surely was the hacking contest taking place on Saturday at which a team of us participated. Peter, Andreas and Steffen made it into the final, where they were defeated by their notably stronger opponents. Nevertheless the unexpected second place is a success for our team. For sure we shot a lot of pictures which will increase in number once they are sorted out. Alltogether we can state this event to be a success for our project and the positive feedback will motivate us to continue our work and to participate in future events of this kind.
