Talking about Warsow

Before you can start reading this interview
I will give you a little introduction about the game!
Warsow is a First-Person-Shooter game designed for online play.
Many games have inspired Warsow, yet it is its own unique game.
Similarities to Quake3 CPMA and Unreal Tournament series are probably the most evident. The team has sought to create a fun, fast, action-packed game
which may be seen as a critique of the many realistic, slow, warfare-orientated First-person-shooters that saturate todays FPS market.
Now that you know what Warsow is you are allowed to read this interview!

Severin 'gripir Friede:
We are the linuX-gamers.net community and we love playing games with linux.
Now it's your turn, please introduce yourself!
Alex "nip" Vanoosthuyse:
Hey linux gamers! I'm Alexander "nip" Vanoosthuyse, most people call me Alex though. I'm a computer science student in my hometown Kortrijk (Belgium), and I'm 22years of age. I've been involved in the Warsow project for, mmm... I think a little over 2 years now.
Severin 'gripir Friede:
Since the first release of warsow there was a linux client. Do you want to keep on doing linux clients in the future? Are you using linux yourself?
Do you code and play with linux at the same time or is linux only a developing platform for you?
Alex "nip" Vanoosthuyse:
Yup, linux is part of the freedom spirit our game has. Some people in the Warsow development team are linux users, so I don't foresee any change in the linux-releases.
I use it, but not as much as I'd like to (although I'm leaning towards exploring the bsd world a bit more /me ducks). I always have a linux install on my pc's (slackware 12 is a blast to work with), but rarely get to use it cause of programs needed for uni... and no, I'm not going to emulate them all :-)
I've fiddled around with some libraries in the past, but never made anything of significance on linux, nope. So linux is my playground platform, just to mess around with right now.
Severin 'gripir Friede:
Are you guys passionated warsow player yourselves or do you lack time for playing it?
Who is the best warsow player in the developer team? Are you into any other game?
Alex "nip" Vanoosthuyse:
I am passionated about Warsow, yes. But lately, I lack the time to play a lot. I do sneak in an occasional test game though! As the internal version needs testing, and I choose to be useful while playing ;-). And to be completely honest, it's more fun playing the internal version, it's an overall better game :D.
Ooh, tough one, if you'd have asked me that a couple of months ago, I would have said chas for sure, but he's out traveling the seven seas now... Ermmm, my vote would be thelawenforcer then, .. I think!
I used to be very active in CPM, playing na (noobs anonymous). I think we've beaten every team out there back in the day. We came back for one season of Warsow, and took first place, but I have to admit, I didn't play at the time (proud of my team mates though! :-) )
Severin 'gripir Friede:
Often I see people talking about Unreal Tournament 3, Quake4 and Warsow at the same time. Are you proud to see your game compared to these dinosaurs of the ego shooter scene?
Alex "nip" Vanoosthuyse:
Hell yeah!
I think every indie game designer would be proud, if his game was to be mentioned next to a commercial game title, especially those with as much revenue as the UT and quake series. It shows that the Warsow community is alive and kicking, and I couldn't be happier about it :-)
Severin 'gripir Friede:
What would you think about warsow and its community if you were totally new to the whole warsow hurly-burly? ;-)
Alex "nip" Vanoosthuyse:
Well, I think I'm in a biased position to objectively talk about it. But, judging from the people I know, who play Warsow, I think I'd fit right in. I haven't seen many bullies around, I know there are some, this is the internet after all... But I think, compared to the other games I've played, we're doing pretty well...
Thinking about how many Warsow TDM/CTF players I know, I'm pretty sure I'd get into a clan really soon, and start practicing to death. :-)
Severin 'gripir Friede:
Did you know that the linuX-gamers developed a live gaming dvd which includes warsow?
What do you think about this project?
Alex "nip" Vanoosthuyse:
Yup, seen it some time ago! I was happy about it ofcourse! I think it's a step in the right direction for Warsow to be packed in a linux distribution. More means to distribute Warsow = a larger player base = a good thing! Bundled with a free and stable OS, what more does one need?
Severin 'gripir Friede:
I know, everyone is trying to get some very special and top secret information about the coming 0.4 release of Warsow. I don't want to annoy you, but there is no way around it.
What is planned for the new version? Did you concentrate more on the graphics or the gameplay improvements?
Alex "nip" Vanoosthuyse:
Well, as mentioned in a previous blog statement, the promised renderer upgrades aren't going to be included in the 0.4 release. This is because our artists currently have a lot of work IRL, and thus, the deadline we have planned for 0.4, isn't managable for the artists. I mean, remaking some maps and creating new textures and re-doing + making new models, takes a lot of time.
So, currently we're focusing on the gameplay. But as we're trying to change a lot at once, it's going to be tight, fitting everything in for 0.4.
On a more global note: gameplay has always been more important to us, but there's no denying that, if the game doesn't appeal, visually, no one will play it. So in short, yes we have to pay attention to the visuals as well...
Severin 'gripir Friede:
Do you think it is important to develop or to establish some anti-cheat mechanism into the game?
Alex "nip" Vanoosthuyse:
Yes, it is very important. Especially since we're focusing on the e-sport gamers.
But it saddens me to say, that all the mails we've sent out to the anti-cheat companies, still remain unanswered. And making a new anti-cheat that works on both windows and linux platforms, would be spreading our coding resources thin. Secondly, it's not our intention to make an anti-cheat, we're a game development group, not a security group :-)
Severin 'gripir Friede:
What do the developers do in their "real" lives? How old are they?
Do they eat the same food for breakfast as we do?
Alex "nip" Vanoosthuyse:
They don't eat the same food no, they live on crisps, bourbon and beer + they never sleep, ever.
Well, there are about 20 people in the Warsow team, ranging from 17 to 30-something. We have quite the intelligent group actually, just to name a few: blx is getting his "diplom" in physics, kermit is getting his masters in Computer Science, the artists all have a degree, or are studying to get their degree in arts, ... In short, there's a lot of brain power in there ;-)
Severin 'gripir Friede:
What's your greatest wish for christmas? Where and how will you celebrate it?
Alex "nip" Vanoosthuyse:
Christmas? I'll celebrate it at home, with my girlfriend and family :-)
My greatest wish(es), easy exams :-) and a good release for Warsow 0.4!
Severin 'gripir Friede:
Now it is your turn again, yell out whatever you want to the linuX-gamers.net community!
Alex "nip" Vanoosthuyse:
I'd like to thank linuX-gamers.net to give me the opportunity to talk about Warsow, and would like to thank the linux gamers for supporting this OS and community.
Thank you very much for the interview Alex, I hope warsow will become stunningly successful!
